Things You Probably Didn’t Know You Could Feed Your Dog
Feeding your dog the right amount for its size is very important if you want a healthy canine. However, many people don’t realise the sheer amount of things their dogs can actually eat! Think you must stick with commercial dog food? Wrong! Here are some foods that you probably didn’t know your dog could eat:
- Apples: Apples are just as good for dogs as they are for humans. They contain many antioxidants and nutrients that will give your dog health and energy. However, make sure you don’t give them the pips. The pips actually contain a form of cyanide that dog’s systems can’t process. Humans can; that’s why it doesn’t matter if we accidentally eat one!
- Eggs: Eggs are the perfect food for giving your dog a healthy, shiny coat. Some people give them raw, but others worry about digestive issues and salmonella. If you’re worried about this, just scramble them!
- Fish: Fish is another great source of protein and fat for your dog and is great for those who are a little sensitive to meat. You should find that with regular consumption of fish, your dog’s coat looks shinier than ever before.
- Rice and Pasta: Rice and pasta can settle a dog’s stomach, so if you’ve had a poorly dog, this could be a good meal idea for them. Usually, whole grain is better than white!
- Frozen Yoghurt: Many dogs are sensitive to dairy, but frozen yoghurt contains small amounts. Providing you only give your dog a small spoonful of this as a treat, they will be fine. They like to eat things that are bad for them just like humans do, but you don’t want to poison them!
- Pumpkin: Pumpkin is brilliant for your dog’s digestive system and contains plenty of antioxidants, a bit like WellyTails dog supplements. Give your dog a small amount each day and you can be sure you’re keeping them in great health.
- Peanut Butter: Most nuts are bad for dogs, but the occasional bit of peanut won’t hurt them. In fact, peanut butter can help them get more protein, fat, and fibre in their diets. I know people who like to coat the inside of a toy conch with this to keep them occupied, but you can just pop it on top of their food if you like.
- Plain Popcorn: Popcorn without the salt or butter is fine for dogs to snack on too. Next time you have a movie night why not give them a bowl of this so they can join you?
It’d be silly to tell you foods you can feed your dog without telling you foods that you can’t. Here’s a quick list of foods you should avoid giving your dog at all costs:
- Human chocolate.
- Grapes.
- Raisins.
- Coffee.
- Alcohol.
- Avocado.
- Onions, garlic, chives.
You want your dog to be in the best shape possible, so make sure you stick to these guidelines when feeding them. The amount you give them in a serving will depend on the size and activity level of your dog, so do your research!
