Dog ID Tags and the Law.
In the UK, the Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address of the owner, we advise you include your phone number for quick return if your dog is found. Dog ID Tags and the Law is an important topic all dog owners need to familiarise themselves with.
Poppy and Pals advise a plastic triple strength tag, we use identitag. Most dog tags can be bought for a couple of pounds and are an inexpensive necessity for all dog owners.
Microchips
From the 6th of April 2016 it has been compulsory for owners to ensure to microchip their dogs. A microchip is a small device the size of a grain of rice. It is implanted in the dogs neck by a vet or qualified individual.
The insertion of the device is a painless procedure and totally safe. Although there have been cases of chips moving so a thorough check with a scanner every vaccination period is advised. A microchip implantation usually costs around £20 at local vets. There are some places such as the Dogstrust who offer subsidises. Your puppy can be microchipped from the age of 8 weeks or 12 if it is a small breed. Legally all puppies should be sold micro-chipped!
